Black Minds Math Leadership

The Black Minds Math Leadership Program is the leadership development arm of BMEA. It exists to support an intergenerational mentoring approach that creates confident and skilled mathematicians and a pipeline for Black males to enter the teaching profession. Recognizing the lack of Black male presence in elementary and middle schools, our model is designed for high school mentors to engage the younger generation as positive Black males in a teaching role for elementary-aged students. This training and development model is designed to help improve math proficiency in Detroit-area schools by increasing student capacity for productive struggle and productive talk, building the habits of mind that will create mathematical mindsets among emerging young Black male leaders.

The Black Minds Math Leadership Program seeks to create a community that nurtures the Black male identity and a community of math learners who support one another in their growth. The program is facilitated both during school hours meeting with young leaders to proactively support them while actively engaged in their learning and after school hours to develop community and cultivate skills.
