Robert Hollifield, Jr. In Memoriam Gift Fund

Robert Hollifield, Jr. (June 14, 1934 – October 4, 2021) was a brilliant teacher and a true “people person” who worked all of his life to support education; aligning perfectly with the mission of BMEA to improve the educational outcomes of all students.

Mr. Hollifield was a long-time educator and administrative professional, beginning in the Detroit Public Schools. His summers were spent coaching children to swim, and he worked as a Wayne County Deputy Sheriff during the riots of Detroit. He was also a true advocate for Black children, African-Centered education, and worked to provide educational services and programs to migrant children in the states of Michigan and California.

Additionally, he was an active supporter of the National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE), exhibiting at their conventions, was a charter member of the Detroit Association of Black Storytellers, and provided support to the Broadside Press. Some of the Detroit schools where he is fondly remembered include Cooper Elementary School, Detroit City Alternative High School, and Martin L. King, Jr., Sr. High School.

Through your generous gift, BMEA will be enabled to extend Mr. Hollifield’s legacy into the future. We are honored that Sylvia, Gail, Khalilah, Brian, and the entire family have chosen to commemorate the legacy of Mr. Hollifield through this gift in memorial to support the mission and programs of BMEA.
