Staff Spotlight: Meet Ms. Staci L. Williams

Get to know BMEA’s Chief Operating Officer, Ms. Staci L. Williams. We sat down with Staci to get to know more about her role at BMEA, why she is committed to BMEA’s mission of transforming schools, and what it means to be a Black woman leader in the educational nonprofit space.

Q: What inspired you to join the staff of BMEA?

For more than a decade, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside BMEA Founder Dr. Curtis Lewis. During this time, I’ve witnessed his remarkable ability to transform school spaces into liberatory communities of teaching and learning that amplify student voice and dismantle oppressive educational structures. When he was led to apply his years of research and expertise to establishing BMEA and impact Black and Brown babies nationwide, I considered it an honor and privilege to have been asked to join the movement.

Q: As COO, what are some of your roles and responsibilities?

Simply put, my priority as Chief Operations Officer is to operationalize the CEO’s vision. I support marketing, fund and development, logistic-specific operational activities/initiatives, and pertinent financial objectives for the organization.

Q: What does it mean to you to be a Black woman leader in the educational nonprofit sector?

Representation matters, and as a Black woman in this space, I am authentic and unapologetic about my well-deserved seat and voice at the table.

Q: What are you most excited about from BMEA in 2024?

Of course, I’m excited about our 2nd Annual Educators’ Gala returning to the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History on June 8th (Stay tuned for ticket info – coming soon)! However, I am most excited about BMEA’s work in education policy reform. While we train and develop several teachers and school leaders across the country by supporting them in transforming their individual school communities, our policy work aims to transform the entire education system nationwide. That systemic transformation is what I am most excited about BMEA being at the forefront of.
